Inside/Out BlogI am thrilled to have been invited to author a blog on the Seattle Post-Intelligencer web site. My blog is called "The Real You" and I encourage you to check it regularly, for tips and advice on fashion, style, and shopping – and how, when done right, your look will express the real you. Check out my blog at http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/therealyou/
Excerpts from Recent Blog PostsOn brightening up as summer turns to fall: "Fall is here and I'm not ready to succumb to the darkness of the season that will soon be upon us. The orange tote might just be what I"m looking for...." On celebrating the present: "I'm often in people's closets hearing about "the old days." This could include when they were thinner, less gray, in better shape, etc. You get the picture. The truth is, life is happening right now...." On opening up to new places to shop: "One nice surprise on my shopping travels has been my discovery of Bellevue Square. Obviously, I'm joking here but the truth is, I"ve never been an Eastside shopper. I've lived in Seattle for long enough that I've gotten use to the downtown stores, energy and scene. However, branching out it what it's all about...." On women taking care of themselves: "Most moms and women I know are very giving. Extremely hard working and rarely do much for themselves...." On remembering who you are: "A few years ago I heard a commentator on the red carpet say, "just because you can, doesn't mean you should." And it's very true...." On pushing the boundaries of your wardrobe: "My recommendation to you is to try one new look this spring that you would never have put on before...." On getting wardrobe advice from your sister: "There is something that someone who has known you for 45 years can do that sometimes other people cannot do...." On taking care of yourself when you're not feeling great: "It is hard to think that spending any time or money on how you look will actually make you feel better. But the truth is, it works...." On finding jeans long enough for tall girls: "I get little sympathy from most people who think that it's lucky to be tall (and it is) but it is also very hard to find jeans or pants that can be worn with anything other than a flat..." On knowing your own tastes: "I bought a beautiful beaded necklace about a week ago and I have yet to take it out of the bag and wear it. Unless I've purchased something for a special event and I'm saving it, that's usually a good sign that it's not right for me..." On the perks of aging: "It hit me (as it often does as I watch my daughter grow up) that it's such a relief NOT to be young again. Working that hard to fit in and looking like everyone else is so exhausting. Thank goodness that as we we grow and mature we no longer feel like we need to try so hard..." On surprises from Old Navy: "Old Navy came out with a new line of 'designer jeans' a few months ago. I thought, hah! There is NO way these jeans will look, feel or hang like $200 jeans so I didn't even bother to check them out. Well, I was wrong..." On work-out clothes: "I really believe that if you are going to the trouble of exercising with the goal of feeling and looking your best you might as well look great while in the process..." On dressing for the size you are today: "I understand that clothes are expensive and it would be great to be able to wait until you were the 'perfect size' (whatever that is) before you shop for something spectacular and new. However, your life is going on right now and how you look and feel about yourself goes right along with that..." On airplane travel: "There is something about sitting in coach but dressed like you could be in first class any minute that makes the adventure seem all the more like an adventure, no matter where you are going. I also believe that when you are dressed better you act better. Nicer to the flight attendants, more patient with the slow moving people in front of you..." On dressing for fancy events: "I looked at my calendar last night and realized that I am attending a couple of events in a month that require a bit of preparation. In years past I would get to the actual night of the big event and begin the slow panic of what to wear and how to make it look pulled together. I don't do that anymore because I've learned some 'basics' of prepping for an event..." |
